Veris awarded contract as part of Sydney Metro southwest upgrade

Veris Australia has been awarded a contract to provide surveying services to Sydney Metro’s Southwest metro upgrade.

Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project.

Services started in May 2019 in the city’s North West with a train every four minutes in the peak. Metro rail will be extended into the CBD and beyond to Bankstown in 2024. There will be new CBD metro railway stations at Martin Place, Pitt Street and Barangaroo and new metro platforms at Central.

In 2024, Sydney will have 31 metro railway stations and a 66-kilometre standalone metro railway system – the biggest urban rail project in Australian history. There will be ultimate capacity for a metro train every two minutes in each direction under the Sydney city centre.

The services, to be provided to the John Holland Pty Ltd and Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction Pty Ltd joint venture (JHLORJV), are expected to generate $2.5 million in revenue for Veris Australia over a two-year period.

The contract award follows Veris Australia’s successful involvement in the Sydenham Station and Junction upgrade, where it has been providing a range of surveying and spatial services to the existing JHLOR JV. Those services, valued at $6.7 million over a three-year period, are due for completion at the end of 2021.

The Southwest metro upgrade will deliver important improvements to the more than 125-year-old Bankstown Line to allow the operation of the new metro trains. The work will include:

  • Upgrading 15 bridges and underpasses that cross over or under the railway, including installation of safety screens
  • Civil construction including work on retaining walls, culverts and track drainage
  • Fencing along the rail corridor and the segregation of the existing freight line from the new metro rail line
  • Rail systems work including new track crossovers, upgrading and refurbishing overhead wiring and work to support signalling and communication equipment
  • Utility modifications.

Michael Shirley, Chief Executive Officer, Veris Australia commented:

“It’s pleasing to see the continuation of the strong relationship developed with the John Holland Laing O’Rourke Joint Venture as part of our successful involvement in the Sydenham Station and Junction upgrade continue with the Southwest metro upgrade program.

“Providing the surveying services for the Southwest metro upgrade demonstrates our continued capacity to support the delivery of the Sydney Metro project including the Sydenham Station and Junction upgrades, Waterloo Station and Integrated Station Development, Sydney Metro City & Southwest (Stage 2) station excavations, and Sydney Metro Northwest.”
