The Overview
Isiah didn’t set out with a clear vision of becoming a surveyor. During his Master of Spatial Engineering at the University of Melbourne, he enrolled in a surveying unit – and everything shifted.
Discovering Surveying
Unlike many of his theory-based subjects, surveying was practical and hands-on. He was learning with real equipment, working through real-world scenarios and seeing how data translated directly into physical outcomes. That early exposure to fieldwork and applied problem-solving set the foundation for his career path. In October 2024, Isiah joined Veris as a Graduate Surveyor through the Young Professionals Program.
Why Veris & the Young Professionals Program
For Isiah, hands-on experience was the priority. As a graduate, he wanted exposure – not just theory or observation. Veris stood out because of its reputation in surveying and its ability to offer diverse project opportunities.
Regular check-ins with a unit leader and mentor, formal training sessions throughout the year and access to experienced licensed surveyors created an environment where growth felt intentional. He first heard about the YPP at the ISV rooftop networking event, where Veris team members shared their experiences in the industry. Seeing the enthusiasm and career pathways available made the program feel like a natural starting point.

A Week in the Life of a Graduate Surveyor
Isiah’s role moves between the field and the office giving him a complete view of the surveying lifecycle.
Field Days
On site, Isiah works alongside experienced surveyors using equipment such as total stations and GPS systems. Learning directly from licensed surveyors accelerates technical development and reinforces professional standards.
Fieldwork builds:

Office Days

Seeing the full progression from site measurements to final deliverable has been one of the most valuable aspects of the program.
Being involved at every stage has helped him understand not just what surveyors produce, but why accuracy and detail matter.

A Culture That Encourages Growth
Starting out in any profession can be intimidating. Isiah describes the Veris team culture in two words: Collaborative and supportive. Graduates are not expected to know everything and they are encouraged to ask questions.

Beyond day-to-day mentoring, the YPP also includes structured training sessions throughout the year covering topics such as project management and strategic planning. This broader exposure helps graduates understand not just technical delivery, but how surveying fits within larger infrastructure programs and business operations.
