Cross River Rail RIS package

The Rail Integration and Systems (RIS) package is a part of the $6.3 billion Cross River Rail project. The RIS package will deliver the design, supply and installation of the supporting rail systems and brownfield works to integrate Cross River Rail into the wider Queensland Rail train network.

The Challenge

Cross River Rail is a complex major rail project that has a required a range of surveying services to support the delivery of the RIS package for our client - Unity Alliance.

The upgrade and augmentation of existing rail yards during planned shutdowns has required a surveying team with the capacity and flexibility to work across weekends, public holidays and strict 24-hour periods. In addition, the project has involved under-bore tunnelling, making it vital to understand if the works were causing even the slightest changes to track infrastructure.

Our Solution

Our team delivered a bespoke rail monitoring solution, and is currently providing a comprehensive range of engineering surveys to the meet the needs of Cross River Rail and the Unity Alliance.

Monitoring platform for track movements

Working closely with our client and Queensland Rail, Veris recommended and installed a wireless, automated monitoring platform to measure for any track movement during under-bore tunnelling to run utility services beneath the rail track. The solution included up to 54 tilt sensors. The sensors connected wirelessly to a solar-powered gateway that transmits the data for analysis.

The solution, which was fast and easy to deploy, delivered 24-hour live reporting, as well as access to the data from anywhere with an internet connection.

Supporting construction across multiple sites

Our survey crews are providing a comprehensive range of Engineering Survey services including earthworks, structures (bridges, retaining walls and other structural concrete), existing and new rail, underground and above ground service location both new and existing.

We have been able to supply a team of up to 7 surveyors across multiple sites including Mayne Yard, Clapham Yard and Dutton Park station. The multi-year project has required our teams to work across weekends, public holidays and strict 24-hour periods to accommodate shutdown of the rail network.

Outcomes

Our ongoing support to the Cross River Rail RIS package has delivered the following outcomes:

  • Risk management and safety: A rail monitoring solution that provided all stakeholders with access to the reporting data, including the client and the construction crews on site, around the clock, to mitigate potential risks and ensure the safety of all stakeholders.
  • Scheduling: The flexibility of our teams to meet the timeframes required for the project has ensured works are completed within the necessary rail shutdown windows.
