Kill the PDF: Moving Urban Planning Beyond Static Tools

Our very own Nichola Panaretos, Senior Consultant - Associate Urban Design and Nathan Quadros, General Manager Digital Solutions, recently co-authored an article in Planning News titled Kill the PDF: Moving Urban Planning Beyond Static Tools. In it, they explore how the planning profession can, and must, move beyond static formats like PDFs and paper maps to embrace dynamic, data-driven technologies.

Urban planning is facing increasing pressure to deliver faster approvals, respond to housing demand, and adapt to climate and economic shifts. Yet many planning processes still rely on outdated tools that limit collaboration, slow down decision-making, and obscure real-time insights.

Nichola and Nathan argue that planners must lead the digital transformation by adopting platforms like digital twins, GIS systems, and interactive modelling tools. These technologies allow planners to simulate policy impacts, track infrastructure rollout, and respond to evolving conditions with precision.

They also highlight institutional barriers, such as regulatory frameworks and tender requirements, that continue to demand static outputs, undermining innovation. The article calls for improved digital literacy across the profession and a shift in mindset to ensure planners remain central to shaping our cities.

At Veris, we’re proud to support this vision. With our investment in spatial data and digital solutions, we’re helping clients and governments transition to smarter, more responsive planning systems.
