Squadron Energy GIS Solution

Squadron Energy is Australia's leading renewable energy company that develops, operates, owns renewable energy assets in Australia. They are 100% Australian owned and have 2 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy in operation and under construction.

The Challenge

Squadron Energy identified limitations within its current Geographic Information System (GIS). As their wind farm operations and battery development projects expanded across NSW, Queensland, and Victoria, their existing GIS infrastructure, primarily using desktop QGIS on a shared network drive, presented scalability and data management challenges. They recognised the need for a more robust, enterprise-level GIS solution and related processes and governance to support future growth, improve operational efficiency, and enhance decision-making.

Our Solution

Squadron Energy engaged the former Spatial Vision team, now part of Veris, to conduct a comprehensive GIS review and options analysis, inclusive of recommendations and an implementation plan.

Extensive Consultation

Workshops and interviews were held with a diverse range of Squadron Energy stakeholders (renewable engineers, project developers, site managers, IT) to understand current GIS usage, pain points, and future requirements.

Current State Assessment

A thorough evaluation of Squadron Energy's existing GIS infrastructure, data management practices, skills, and technology was conducted.

Options Analysis

The options analysis included the Identification and evaluation of two enterprise GIS technology options:

  • Enterprise QGIS (open-source); and
  • Esri ArcGIS Enterprise.

Recommendation & Implementation Plan

A detailed proposal was provided for Esri ArcGIS Enterprise, including licensing, Azure hosting, implementation tasks, training, and ongoing administration.
