Shepparton Virtual Bridge Inspection
Veris partnered with WGA to develop and demonstrate a Level 2 AI-guided virtual bridge inspection methodology for the Shepparton Bridge in Victoria. The project showcased Veris’ BridgeSiDe workflow, integrating UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) imagery, AI and 3D modelling to enhance bridge inspection quality, safety and efficiency compared to traditional methods. The project demonstrated how digital inspection workflows can detect and assess surface and structural defects such as cracking, corrosion and spalling, while enabling remote collaboration and repeatable condition monitoring.
Our Solution
The innovative digital solution developed by Veris included:
- Deployed a UAV for reality capture of the bridge, including under-deck imagery, to create high-resolution datasets for 3D modelling.
- Applied AI-assisted defect detection and visual analysis using Veris’ BridgeSiDe digital solution platform.
- Produced 3D reality meshes, oriented imagery and annotated defect maps for digital inspection and collaboration.
Outcomes
The project delivered a high-quality virtual inspection environment, reducing on-site risk and improving inspection efficiency. This enabled engineers to collaboratively assess defects remotely through a shared digital portal – BridgeSiDe. The workflow demonstrated measurable improvements in data capture, repeatability and cost savings compared to traditional methods establishing a scalable model for future bridge asset inspections.
