Gas Plant Dimensional Control Surveys

Veris is a key partner for our clients in the Oil and Gas sector to deliver precise as-built surveys to support the design, fabrication, and installation of complex pipework in brownfield environments. Our dimensional control and industrial metrology division are an essential element in enabling our clients to design, fabricate and install with confidence for a clash and rework free project.

The Challenge

Our client required a large part of its Iona Gas Storage Facility to be surveyed via 3D scanning to facilitate the design of replacement pipework for the integration of new process equipment. As plant shutdown windows were short and required all replacement piping to be prefabricated and fully tested prior to installation, this left no tolerance for rework therefore requiring a high degree of dimensional conformance of all equipment prior to installation.

Our Solution

To empower our clients in realising this vision, Veris offers a broad range of dimensional control solutions which includes high-definition 3D Laser Scanning and precision Laser Trackers which in the world of digital design and fabrication form an integral part of the project.

This project required over 300 laser scans to be captured throughout the plant with critical tie-in-points and pipework modelled to a precision of ±1mm to document the size, position, skewness, and orientation of over 50 Tie-In-Points and supplied to the plant designer for piping isometrics in preparation for fabrication.

Throughout the fabrication process, Veris were engaged by the fabrication contractor to provide precision dimensional control surveys utilising the latest Laser Tracker technology to provide dimensional conformance and advanced digital assembly analysis of all fabricated piping and equipment to ensure a clash free installation with elimination of rework.

Outcomes

Our unique and holistic dimensional control solution enables a range of key outcomes including:

  • Innovative surveying solutions that shorten project duration, improve site safety, and increase accuracy.
  • Smarter decision making and spatial intelligence with virtual site visits to enable the plant operator, designer, and fabricator to fully understand site context and access restrictions.
  • Identification and elimination of dimensional clashes and non-conformances earlier in the design and fabrication process to reduce project risk and rework.
  • Direct survey to CAD with real-time dimensional control survey feedback enable the adjustment of new pipe spools on the fly.
  • Advanced digital assembly techniques to accurately predict tolerance stack-ups and achieve first time fit-ups of complex plant and structures.
